FIELD DIRECTOR, CHINA REGIONAL CLIMATE CENTER

BASED IN GUTIANSHAN NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE, ZHEJIANG PROVINCE

Earthwatch Institute is an international environmental organization that engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Our research program focuses on Climate Change; the sustainable management of resources; oceans; and communities in order to better understand critical environmental issues and inform and influence local agendas.

We are embarking on an exciting new program with HSBC Bank and several international NGO partners, furthering our strong experience of corporate and NGO partnerships. This global, 5 year program aims to reduce the impacts of Climate Change on people and their livelihoods, by promoting action in some of the world’s major cities, river basins and ecosystems. Earthwatch’s research focus within this partnership will be to investigate climate change impacts on forest ecosystems, including the link to anthropogenic disturbance. This Field Center will be located at Gutianshan National Nature Reserve, Kaihua, Zhejiang Province, China.

The Field Director, China Regional Climate Center will deliver the HSBC Climate Partnership program, overseeing delivery of the research and education program to achieve the agreed key performance indicators and to ensure the program achieves an ongoing environmental, economic and social legacy within the climate centre landscape. Under the direction of the Head of Climate Change Field Centers based in US, the Field Director will be responsible for the safe and successful fielding of teams during the majority of the calendar year, ensuring that Earchwatch standards for health, safety and participant management in the field are met at the Field Center as well as ensuring the effective implementation of the HSBC Climate Partnership Field Programme. The Field Director will supervise the Support and Logistics Officer as well as the Learning and Communications Manager. Additionally, the Field Director will work collaboratively with the research technicians and post-doctoral researchers for reporting of results and successful delivery of the research program through teams of employee fellows.

Requirements:

• Ph.D or equivalent experience. Preference will be given to those candidates possessing a background in forest ecology
• Strong familiarity with the Asia Pacific region preferably with environmental issues in China, with proven networks in the environmental and education communities
• Strong networking skills, able to network with local stakeholders, government, environmental NGO’s and corporate partners
• Experience in working with people from different nationalities and multi-cultural background
• Exposure to training and facilitation programs
• Demonstrated leadership skills, ideally with teams in the field
• Excellent track record in people and project management, competence in negotiation and influencing others
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Chinese
• Proven financial management skills, logistical planning and organizational skills
• A commitment to ‘citizen science’ and the ethic of environmental volunteering
